Read PDF Files with a Fast Reader

Adobe PDF files have become a nearly-universal means of distributing documents that are not meant to have their contents modified and need to look the same on every computer platform.

When I’m working, I find I spend enormous amounts of time reading PDF files.   That’s the way I download many product and shared documents.  Some very long.  Waiting for Acrobat Reader to open can often be frustrating and time consuming.

Foxit Reader is a free light-weight very fast PDF reader that will keep you reading rather than waiting for documents to open.

In addition to being a very small and fast program, Foxit Reader will allow you to set bookmarks within the PDF file and add annotations and notes as you read.

Foxit Reader has an intuitive interface that features tabbed pages for multiple open PDFs, much like a tabbed-browser.  It can also play video and music embedded in PDF files.

Foxit Reader is available for Windows, Linux and some mobile devices.

While Foxit Reader is free, there are “advanced” add-ons that add value to Foxit Reader available for purchase.

Update: New Picasa 3 with lots to love

picassa-logo.jpg It looks like Google is the big news this week. Yesterday we reviewed Google Chrome, the new Windows browser. Also Google has announced a YouTube-like video service called Google Video for Business and a major new release of Picasa, their free photo-editor and organizer. Picasa's new version adds many useful new features -- ones that you might typically pay "real money" to buy. Picasa has become more integrated with Picasa Web Albums, Google's free website version of Yahoo's Flickr. It has become much easier to move your pictures from your PC to your Web Albums and you can now keep your PC-based album in-sync with your web album. When you edit a picture on your PC, it is automatically copied to the web. Here's a few favorites from the Picasa new features:
  • Make Movies - edit short videos or make movies from your photos
  • Preview Images with Picasa Photo Viewer - Preview Images in Internet Explorer (why IE?) or folders and then edit in Picasa
  • Retouch your pictures for blemishes
  • Add text or watermarking to your pictures
  • Manage folders on your computer - Actually move folders around on your disk
  • Get more information about your pictures - Get access to all that geeky info your digital pictures contain like f-stop and shutter speed.
The usual warning applies, this is beta software but it seems very clean and since most Google web services have "beta" tacked to them, I no longer get very concerned. I've been using Gmail exclusively for four years and it still is tagged as beta. Also, to Mac users-regret Picasa is Windows-only. Give it a try, download Picasa 3 beta. picasa-screen.jpg Our previous Picasa story.

Keep Your PC Clean for Free

The more you use your Windows PC, the slower it gets. The more you surf the web the more chance you have to pick up extra files and nasty little annoyances called spyware. We told you about it before and offered you Glary Utilities as a way to keep your PC running fast and lean. Today we have another free PC utility, Advanced Windows Care Personal, for tuning up your computer. Go ahead and use them both. The way these kinds of utilities are written, often one program will find something the other may have missed. AWC also does a good job of making you create a backup point before running any of the tune-ups. A good practice that makes sure if something goes astray you can return your computer to a known good point. awc-screen.jpg Download AWC [Via WebWorkerDaily]

Convert Your Audio or Video to Any Format

Quick Media Converter is a free Windows-only utility that will take your video and audio files in almost any format and convert them to almost any other format -- as in this is a great way to get videos to your iPod, create a DVD or move them to your gaming console. In fact Quick Media Converter is a graphic front end to a command line utility called FFmpeg. FFmpeg requires a fair level of command-line skill so QMC is a great way to do your conversions. Output formats include iPod, iPhone, DVD, avi, Flash for the Web, Xbox, PS3 and Wii. Download Quick Movie Converter from CocoonSoftware [via lifehacker ] qmc-screenshot.jpg
