My gushing fanboy support for Gmail always had one caveat — it couldn’t be used offline. What to do in planes and locations without wi-fi?

Problem solved.

Gmail now uses the open source Gears technology which allows websites to be used offline by storing necessary information while online.

You can now read your already received email and compose new messages while offline. When you’re back online the messages will be sent.

If you’re a Gmail users, and why wouldn’t you be, go to the Labs menu in settings and enable Offline. This one put a menu entry in of Offline (1.0) in the upper right corner of the screen. Choose that option and you will be guided through installing Gears, if necessary, and storing information on your computer.

There is even a “Flaky Connection Mode” that can be used to stay safe when you can’t trust your connection, as is often the case with public wi-fi spots like coffee shops.

Over at TechCrunch, Michael Arrington posted his list of the computer applications he can’t do without, his were all web services with his iPhone thrown in for good measure.

Mike’s is a  good list and well worth reading his post explaining his choices.

Monkey see, monkey do — I made my list.  The official Enquiring Mimes list includes a few desktop applications that I use and all are applications are ones I use everyday.

Here they are in fairly random order.

1. Gmail.com – Without a doubt my favorite email application, a web
2. Evernote - Both web and desktop for storing and organizing clips.  Syncs between computers.
3. Windows Live Writer – Best desktop blogging applications, only Windows, unfortunately.
4. Google Chrome, Firefox- Still haven’t picked a favorite between the two browsers.  I like Firefox extensions, but also like Chrome’s spareness and speed.  Really flies on Gmail.
5. Pandora.com – My fun choice.  Any kind of music I can think of, I listen on and off all day.
6. Twitter.com – My micoblogging addiction in 140 characters.  Follow me.
7. Techmeme.com – First stop for all tech news.
8. Skype.com – I spend the day making calls using Skype, for US almost free, for the rest of the world, very inexpensive.  Sorry t-mobile.
9. WordPress -  all the blogs use this wonderful open source software.
10. Google Reader – Cutting down on web surfing with very powerful RSS reader.
11. Picasa – Excellent photo organizer and enhancer from Google.  As of today, available for Mac, too.
12. Google Docs, Zoho - I haven’t picked a favorite, use both to replace MS Office.  Both free, both great, both good collaboration.

The Twitter love it or hate it reaction is similar to love-hate we have in the human experience with death so it makes sense that there be 5 Stages of Twitter Acceptance beginning with Denial, much like in Elisabeth Kübler-Ross outlined in her book “On Death and Dying.”

Acceptance of Twitter, of course, is much less finite than in Kübler-Ross model.

The stages are:

1. Denial:
   • Example – “I feel fine.”; “This can’t be happening, not to me!”
2. Anger:
   • Example – “Why me? It’s not fair!” “NO! NO! How can this happen!”
3. Bargaining:
   • Example – “Just let me live to see my children graduate.”; “I’ll do anything, can’t you stretch it out? A few more years.”
4. Depression:
   • Example – “I’m so sad, why bother with anything?”; “I’m going to die . . . What’s the point?”
5. Acceptance:
   • Example – “It’s going to be OK.”; “I can’t fight it, I may as well prepare for it.”

Use Gmail?  If you do, you have a free cross-platform, accessible anywhere-you-have-access-to-the-web perfect place to keep your lists. 

When I say lists, I mean the important ones.  There are plenty of useful programs and services for keeping track of the old to-do list.  I’m talking about the real ones like grocery lists, and errand lists and the “honey do” lists.

Just start a new message, give it a title, no addressee necessary, type your list and when you’re finished save it as a draft.  Your list will always be available from a computer on the internet as well as your Blackberry, G1 or iPhone.

Admittedly there are plenty of baby naming sites on the Web, but What a Lovely Name is a new one, just launching, with a few cute twists.

You can choose names by tradition (read ethnicity), personality or even celebrity names (best to be avoided).  As you search you can save your favorites and then email them to friends and family for their opinion.

When you’ve made your final choice you can buy logo-ware from a custom Zazzle online shop with the little one’s custom name and logo.  Maybe, that part doesn’t appeal to me, but you’ve got to give them credit for a clever idea.

I found an interest nickname for Daniel – Danek.  Should I start using it?

Here goes for this week:

Zoho Status – In what seems like a very transparent gesture.  Zoho has setup a status page that shows the response time and availability of all their web applications.  It seems like a great customer service move and if you use Zoho apps it could be valuable.

Netflix for Mac – Here at the EM sweatshop, we reported you’d be able to finally watch, Netflix Watch Instantly, streaming movies from your Mac before the end of the year.  Well the time is now.  You can  start using the new Silverlight viewer available for Mac and PC, by opting-in from your Netflix account.

Gmail Video Chat – If you use Google Gmail for your mail and I think there are plenty of good reasons why you should, you can now add voice and video chat to your account.  Works really well for distributed work teams.

Flip HD – Flip Video, the folks that started out making the really inexpensive, easy-to-use and easy-to-get-on-your-computer video cameras now has a new, more expensive model that will take high definition video.  It’s sells for $229 – which seems a bit much.  I find the cheap one I have very handy for baby-walking-pictures and dog-jumping-at-agility vids.

Ideally you would store all you digital pictures on your Windows computer in Picasa and then be able to automatically upload them to your Flickr account.  Out of the box this process takes several steps.

If you’d like to make this workflow painless you need to do about five minutes of installing and configuring and then your uploading will be a breeze.

We’ll assume you’ve already downloaded Picasa, if not, get the version 3 beta, it’s great.  Got an account on Flickr? No, go to Flickr.com and sign up with your Yahoo! username and password.

Next download and install FlickrUploadr.  This is an official Flickr application that let’s you upload and configure bulk digital images from your PC.  Get it here.

Okay, now the last step.  Download a little piece of “glue” called “picasa2flickr”, sounds right, doesn’t it?  Download and click on this magic piece of glue will install a new button in the control panel at the bottom of your Picasa screen called “send to Flickr”.

So this is the way the magic will happen, you will choose the picture/s in Picasa that you want to upload to Flickr by selecting the picture/s, then press “Send to Flickr” which activates FlickrUploadr which will give you the opportunity to add titles, descriptions and keywords to you picture.  You’ll press “Upload Pictures” and when the pictures have been uploaded to Flickr, you’ll be given one more  chance to see and manipulate them online before they appear in your Flickr account.

Good for consumers, Microsoft is going to support the Firefox and Safari browsers in addition to Microsoft’s own Internet Explorer.

The online applications will be available to end-users through the Microsoft Office Live service which has ad-funded and subscription options.

While a survey done on ReadWriteWeb earlier this year showed that the majority of that site’s visitors still used the Microsoft Office desktop application for their word processing and spreadsheet needs, there has been growing online competition to the behemoth office suite from the free online suites by Google and Zoho.

We’ve written about the Google and Zoho offerings repeatedly.  It will be interesting to see whether Microsoft will be able to compete online, in the arena they have owned for so long, with the more nimble Zoho and Google.
