Kick-starting small talk

Small talk, considered the bane of intelligent conversation doesn’t have to be.  Let’s face it, awkward as it is, sometimes you just have to make it to avoid worse awkwardness.  Parties? Trade shows? Your new girl friend’s friends when she leaves you alone?

Wired’s How-to Wiki has some ideas for how to get the ball rolling.  Thomas Farley, editor of etiquette guide Modern Manners, breaks it down like this:

Initiate
Open with a question when trying to break the ice. Probably something better than — come here often or what’s your birth-sign?
Think Ahead
Start planning your next move while you’ve got them talking. Listen for possible intelligent questions. People like to talk about themselves, let them. Don’t use the opportunity to just “one up” them.
Three topics max
Probably limit the amount of topics you try to  talk about, they suggest movies, travel and fiction — I’d suggest, if you’re both guys, make it cars, sports, and women.

Close out
When you’re ready to move on, make an excuse of the I-need-to-talk-to-the-host variety and tell them you enjoyed the conversations (even if you didn’t).

There, now you’re on the way to small talk success. Read the wiki entry.

Want an easy way to create PDF File from web pages?

pdfdownload-logo

PDF files were invented as a lingua franca for document and graphic files – in theory they will look and print the same way on any computer and printer.

In that role they work pretty well and can be a convenient way to send documents through email.  They are also a very convenient way to share a web page with another person while expecting they are going to see all the same information as you saw.  It’s also a very reliable way to save web site pages.

But how to easily create a PDF from a web page?

PDF Download, which has been available as a Firefox plugin, is now available as a bookmarklet.

What causes your laptop battery to run out of juice so fast?

I’ve seen various claims from laptop manufacturers regarding battery life.  4, 6, 8 hours.  Most sound exaggeratedly unreal since among the dozen or so PC and Mac laptops I’ve owned, I’ve never seen more than about 2 – 3 hours of battery life.  I’ve been known to fly across the Pacific with a bag full of laptop batteries so that I could work or watch movies for 14 hours.

Below is a pie chart developed by Microsoft engineers that shows which components of a laptop drain the battery.

Very simply, the culprit is the LCD monitor.

Solution: The best way to extend your laptop’s battery life is turn down the backlighting on the LCD as much as possible.

Finding a lost or deleted Vista Recycle Bin

Windows Vista full Recycle Bin.

Image via Wikipedia

File this one away until you need it.

I was once a software engineer and wrote programs.  I probably wasn’t a great programmer but I was a very good debugger.  The reason for my success in that area was that I had made just about every mistake known to man(person) and had had to figure out how to fix them.

Lately in some klutzy move that I can’t even recreate, I deleted the Recycle Bin icon off of my Vista desktop.  At the time I thought, “it’s no big thing.”  As it turned out, having no place to drag files for deletion was a real pain.

So, if you ever fat-finger your Vista Recycle Bin into extinction, here’s what you need to do.

  1. Right click on the Vista Desktop
  2. Select  ‘Change desktop icons’
  3. At the Desktop Icon Settings, check the box next to ‘Recycle Bin’.
  4. Press ‘OK’

Thanks for listening.

Note:  Read the related article explains how I deleted the bin, I just pressed delete.

Banish “Dog Eye” from Your Digital Photos

kaley-red

Everyone knows about “red-eye” in pictures of people and now most digital cameras even correct for it right in the camera, but what about those spooky glowing eyes of your pets?

Sandra, my SO, writes about dogs, sansanpups.com.  Besides the shameless plug, the relevancy is that people are always sending her pictures of their dogs.  The dogs in most of the pictures look like refugees from “The Night of the Living Dead”-pet edition.  See our dog, Kaley, above.  Pet eyes have a reflective quality that, well, reflects back the light from the flash in an even more eerie way than the red-eye in humans.

What to do? What to do?

The easiest way to fix your pet photos is also free.  I’ve mentioned picnik.com before, it’s a very useful online site for repairing and enhancing digital photos.

What sets it apart from the rest is while attempting to fix your pet’s glowing eyes you usually have to play with the normal red-eye settings or go to elaborate steps using something way high-end like Adobe Photoshop, while picnik.com actually allows you a furball option for correcting your pet’s eyes.

Here’s the sequence.

Visit picnik.com

Upload your pet’s pic

Within the Edit tab, choose Red-eye and

there, lo and behold, you’re given a choice between human and furball.

Furball will work great at making your pet’s glowing eyes, stop glowing.

When you’re finished, save your results.
