Nick, I get your point, but this works fine, esp. for the semi-abandoned email accounts.

This is a bad idea. Other people who get your e-mails sent from gmail will see the e-mail coming from John Doe (johndoe@gmail.com) SENT ON BEHALF OF altemail@mydomain.com. The other person will always be able to see your gmail address. Google for domains would be a better solution, or if you don't mind sharing your gmail address with everyone, your suggestion will work.
